Durrell and the Death of Joy

To escape some of the grim news of the past week, I picked up Durrell's
Reflections of a Marine Venus, a travelogue about the island of Rhodes.

There is a quote from a personage V about the death of joy that appears, I
beleive in the chapter that discusses the famous Colossus that was destroyed
by an earthquake. (I'll post exact quote tomorrow)

Further on, Durrell also describes the inhabitants fears regarding the great
god Pan, and the female statue buried and recovered.

Couldn't help thinking of Pynchon's Malta--fwiw...
