It is interesting indeed the way some people respond to differing
opinions--it must be hard to be so right all the time. I'm finding myself
greatly entertained by the ongoing race to demonstrate the most wisdom, the
most compassion, the most understanding of the world's sad situation. What
I find truly odd is that some people seem to believe that an appreciation
for Pynchon must entail some political (or--I hesitate to say--moral)
stance, possibly because of academic saturation, or because of an arrogant
belief that in order to be smart enough to read a difficult book one must
also think alike. Thus a multitude of general statements, as if their
opinions are a given: horror and remorse over Sept. 11 flowing without
qualification into statements that include the word jingo in some manner,
the evil of capitalism and the oppression of Wall Street, presuming accord,
but engaging in tautologies. Rather like religious rites, or frat-boy
measuring contests.

By all means, let's have more!
