William Vollmann wrote a piece in Harper's last year about the Afghani 
situation. It's quite good. Plenty of info on U.S. involvement without being 
blatantly anti-American, lots on the Taliban regime itself, although I can't 
remember whether Osama bin Laden was mentioned or not. Unfortunately, if you 
don't have the actual copy of Harper's (June or July 2000, I think) you'll 
have to pay $9.00 for the article at the Harper's website (this according to 
a friend of mine). One of Vollmann's earliest works, "An Afghanistan Picture 
Show...Or How I Saved The World" could be quite revealing as well. He speaks 
well of both the Afghani and Pakistani people. Might humanize the situation 
somewhat.
