Isn't it that the lady has somewhat surrealistically perceived that she is
about to become part of an off color joke being told by Dixon and is
getting ready to register an objection at the narration's level whereas
said objection would actually be more appropriate UP ONE LEVEL at that of
the narrator (Dixon's level, that is)?
Naturally the Corsican as no clue as to the lady's consternation.
Storytelling gone mad.
