In addition to all the fine sources already mentioned, there was a great
article in the NY Review of Books (Ian Hacking, "Mind Over Matter", March
18, 1999) that discussed mesmerism (and how it was different from other
forms of hypnotism), its uses in medicine before anesthesia, and because
of its use of laying on of hands over the subject, its class/political
implications.

This article used to be on-line for free (that's where I read it), but
unfortunately doesn't seem to be so any longer. Well worth reading if
you have access to it.
