On its first appearance the Learned English Dog is described as "a somewhat
dishevel'd Norfolk Terrier, with a raffish Gleam in its eye" (18).

"Bred in Cambridge, Market Harborough and Norwich in the early twentieth
century he was mainly used as a hunter of vermin.  He was a mixture of
gypsy's dogs that were crossed with weaver's pets."

A product of both metempsychosis and time travel it seems.
