We don't know because they were killed by people who
believed violence to be the answer.

Their murders didn't stop the spread of pacifist ideas
or activism based on the non-violent principles they
bravely -- and effectively -- demonstrated, but their
killings did lead to more violence, in the U.S. and in
India.

Just as WWI led to WWII which led to the "Cold" War,
which gave us Vietnam and many other wars by
superpower proxies elsewhere in the world, continuing
to the present day. Violence begets violence, history
proves that without a doubt.

History also proves that, difficult though it may be,
reconcilation among enemies is possible without war.
It requires hard work and a willingness to relinquish
the knee-jerk tendency to continue the killing,
however -- both of which are difficult to sustain in
the face of a mass of voices calling for more blood.
