After an ultra highspeed urban recon this a.m., not in a
911, but in my nifty thrifty Honda Insight (averaging ca.
64 mph city & highway) it occurred to me that petrol
was only the most obvious addiction the west must shake
(no pun intended) if it is to be successful in the struggle
in which it finds itself.

Not that I'm actively proselytizing the miracles of my
purely vegan diet, but given BSE... and the huge amounts
of resources necessary to "grow" beef, or the cubic box
most chickens spend all of their force-fed lives (ca. 32 days)
in before they make it to the table, maybe I should be.

The healthcare costs of colon and breast cancer, as well
as, coronary artery disease might also plummet in a vegan
world.

But, as I say, I'm not proselytizing. Who am I to get
between the typical Monday Night Football fan and his or
her fill of buffalo-wings or ribs?

And maybe "addiction" is wrong for the generalization of western need.
With such a label can the Dr. Deeply's and their minions be far
behind? Perhaps it is more useful to think of a virtual umbilical
cord stretching from the middle east (maybe the whole placenta
of the third world) to the very belly of our hunger for energy-
spiritual, as well as, that necessary to build and power our machines.

In that sense, maybe the wtc is our omphalos. Birth is always a
messy affair.

Without demeaning the innocent victims, history may look back
on the most recent events as the time when our umbilical cord to
the old world order was finally severed. As per the rev'd, "It
with a Hanging." Cut it or swing might be the message here.
