I rather like this line. Not knowing what the word "Macaroni" might
mean here, I looked it up. I also looked up "Lunarians". A Macaroni was
one who, in the 18th cent., imitated extravagant continental fashions.
A look at the costume of the French and Italian courts in this period
reveals plenty of male leg in lavender hose, velvet, and big hair. A
Lunarian was either someone who looked at the moon, or better, a
character *from* the moon in a fanciful tale.
Whether these folks are common-or-garden dandies, or the more
extravagant continental-ish dandies, or men from outer space, it is
difficult to tell, perhaps because of the poor light. Their
juxtaposition against an early avatar of Seaman "Pig" Bodine and his
fellow deck apes is a nice touch, and typical of P, I venture.
