Oops, forgot The Lunar Society of Birmingham ...
"In the last third of the century, the Royal Society
of London was joined by new provincial scientific
societies, such as the informal Lunar Society of
Birmingham and the Manchester Literary and
Philosophical Society (founded 1781), providing a
local forum for knowledge and culture, drumming up
interest in science, and advancing manufacturer.
Their (all amle) members ... united amateur love of
science with involvements in practical improvements
... which they saw best served by the spread of
capitalist industry."
Roy Porter, English Society in the Eighteenth Century
(rev. ed., New York: Penguin, 1990 [1982]), p. 274 ...
And thanks for reminding me about Porter, Paul N.
(right?), forgot I had this, some other things I'd
marked I'll have to get back to now, but ... but,
still, nothing I've come up with yet quite seems to
catch "Lunarians" as Pynchon is deploying it ...
