Mark Lindquist: OK, other books [than the short-story collections
of Flannery O'Connor] that have affected you as a songwriter?

Peter Buck: Denis Johnson.

PB: I don't know why. "Already Dead" changed me when I read it. I can't
say why or how, but I felt like a different person at the end, in the same
way that when I was a teenager, Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow" completely
moved me.

their name betrays: the devastating, silly, great, headlong,
etc., Sonics.)
