"Radio Poetry Series Host Will Read from His Work,"
Milwaukee Urinal-Sentinel, Sunday, April 21st, 2002
...
Poet Charles Bernstein, the host and co-producer of
the national radio poetry series, LINEbreak, will read
from his work on Wednesday, ending the semester's
readings from four visiting writers at the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Bernstein is the author of three essay collections and
20 books of poetry, including "With Strings,"
"Republics of Reality: Poems 1975-1995," "Dark City,"
"Controlling Interests."
Considered one of the nation's liveliest practitioners
of radically inventive poetry, Bernstein co-edited the
journal L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E and is executive editor and
co-founder of The Electronic Poetry Center. He teaches
at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where
he is the David Gray Professor of Poetry and Letters
and also director of The Poetics Program.
Among his best-known works is "Republics of Reality,"
which includes his out-of-print chapbooks. Reviewing
the collection, Publishers Weekly said: "At once the
most paradoxically controversial and popular,
accessible and most difficult of the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E
poets, Bernstein is also the writer of that group who
strove early on to experiment with the extremes of its
newly minted methods. . . . His attention to spoken
language makes such dense works as 'Poem' both
welcoming and discomforting, expressionistically
cinematic but not without its moments of eye-wink
satiric narrative."
