Defense Minister authorizes an additional 16 buildings in Hebron
By Akiva Eldar, Ha'aretz Correspondent
According to a report published in the al-Quds weekly, Defense Minister
Benjamin Ben-Eliezer authorized the building of an additional 16 structures
at the Tel Rumeida archeological site in the West Bank city of Hebron.
The defense minister's office said in response that, "in light of the recent
shooting attacks at the Jewish settlement in Tel Rumeida, the defense
minister decided several months ago to enable the replacement of seven of
the caravans there and in their place to have only tougher structures."
However, according to attorney Shlomor Lecker, who represents the
Palestinian residents in the area, ten months ago Ben-Eliezer claimed in
response to a petition filed by Lecker to the High Court, that there were no
plans to build additional structures in the area. Ben-Eliezer stated that it
was necessary to build walls alone around the archeological site in order to
protect the settlers.
The defense minister's press advisor, Yaron Vatikay, said that the matter
would be looked into.
