Christianity and Terrance

This of course brings up the Catholic Vs. Puritan/Protestant contrast (In 
_V_ the puritan is called Jacobean).  Catholics value tradition (& ritual) 
primarily.  Protestants value the Word.  Catholics retain veneration of the 
Mother/Goddess, while protestants call that idolatry.  The verbal protestant 
would be of the air/sun.  The mystical catholic would be of the earth/moon.

Both are Christian, but they are very different in orientation (and each 
thinks the other is going to hell).  Pynchon plays with all of these 
contrasts, and more.
