Thanks indeed for posting this Dave. It's surprising to note even with the
brief summary Danson provides here just how much of the technical detail
Pynchon has left out of the novel. A lesser writer might have been inclined
to cram it all in, but the descriptions of equipment and the actual
itinerary, distances, methods etc have been melded inconspicuously into the
narrative or let be. Even the few quotations from Mason's Field Book are
largely bereft of technical jargon.
I've added it to the bibliog. And, by the way, does anybody have publication
details on the 1857 Veech book.
