The right to name is the right to create a world, or something like that.
As their master/owners gave enslaved Africans new names and sought to erase
their original names (and other cultural traits, no more drumming or native
religious celebration, etc.), so did the Europeans rename the native people
and places they encountered and, largely, destroyed.   Pynchon loves to
play with names.
