just a detail, but i think the variations come from the fact that
english-speakers might not be sure how to pronounce or write the french "nez
percé", hence the different spellings.
 how do you pronounce it anyway (in english i mean)? do you pronounce the "z", and do you say
"pierce"?
in france we pronounce apache "apash", sioux "syoo", etc, the way it
reads really. so much for siouxsee and the banshees, everybody here pronounces it "syooksee"... hm...

oh, and for those who don't know, "nez percé" means "pierced nose".
