Mason unprepar'd to believe it.

Why is Mason unprepared to believe this? 
Is it because he is a star-gazer Scientifik? 

Recall that when someone calls Dixon an Astrologer, Mason insists that
Dixon is an Astronomer. This is a bit ironic because Mason has been
putting down Dixon's more earthly vocation-- Surveyor. 

The stars do incline but not compel; no necessity at all, they lead, not
drive: and so gently incline, that a wise man may resist them; the wise
man will rule his stars: they rule us, but God rules them. 

Wilt thou know how far the stars work upon us? I say they do but
incline, & that so gently, that if we will be ruled by reason, they
have  no power over us; but if we follow our own nature, and be led by
sense, they do as much in us as in brute beasts, and we are no better.
