WATSON'S ANNALS of PHILADELPHIA and PENNSYLVANIA

               Vol. I Written 1830 - 1850

Chapter 25. SUPERSTITIONS AND POPULAR CREDULITY

The youth of the present day have little or no conception of the great
advance of agreeable and useful reading got up for their use, and
especially by such an establishment as the Sunday School Union. In
former days some half a dozen little popular works constituted their
all. They were
such as Goody Two Shoes, Tom Thumb, Jack the Giant Killer, Jack and
Jill,
Poor Richard, Gulliver, Robinson Crusoe, Baron Trenck, The Babes in
the Wood ! "Sure you remember the Babes in the Wood !"

Nature Devas:

The deva told Peter everything, from how far apart various plants like
to be to how they dislike getting transplanted. Soon the garden became
incredibly
productive. One huge vegetable weighed 42 lbs. A broccoli head was so
big it fed the group of six for four months!

I remember when I was a child growing up in the seventies and my Mom
took me to see Woody Allen's comedy about the future, Sleeper. Most
memorable was a chase scene through a garden of human-size vegetables
with Woody forever sliding on a giant banana peel.
Ironic as it may seem, the existence of giant vegetables is, today, a
possibility.

Ho, Ho, Ho, Green Giant, but

                         God didn't make little green
                         apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis
                         in the summertime
And there's no such thing as
                         Doctor Seuss
                         Or Disneyland, and Mother
                         Goose, no nursery rhyme
                         God didn't make little green
                         apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis
                         in the summertime
