Yeah, I'd say they're real enough: "I could show you more than one, stuft
and mounted" says Mr Ice at 660.21. And Dixon is "trying to nudge Mason
alert" because Chas is behaving like a goose again; he's not reaching for
him or fearful, the fact that he "mutters" Mason's name notwithstanding.
It's because Mason makes a remark about there being no fish in the river
(660.5-6) that Immanuel chooses to address him rather than Dixon, as the one
who might "dare attempt to catch" one of the "Ghost-Fish", and which causes
the switch in focus. But Mason is soon "simpering like a Milk-maid", as
usual, protesting his unsuitability to the challenge, and before long Mr Ice
has "abruptly" turned his attention to red-coated Dixon as the more likely
lad of the two (661.6).
