+ that's funny! norbert finzsch, who wrote his - still marxist - dissertation on
the cali gold diggers of 1849, was one of my teachers on american history.
during the 90s he was working at the university of hamburg. i had the pleasure
to do his hauptseminar on the age of reconstruction (my paper was about
"the recession of the 1870s in context of reconstruction"). and in fall 96, when
i was graduating, i did my history tests at mr. finzsch. the written one was on
"the guillotine in the perspective of foucault's 'surveiller et punir'", the
oral examination (which was my last test of all after which i stepped out the
door and lighted a big one) had two themes: "the cio and the second new deal"
and "hiphop as a 'postmodern' art-form of afro-american origin". norbert
finzsch, who knows his luhmann well, is among the few historians with solid
knowledge of the social sciences, a fact that gives his teaching a certain
deepness. so if you have the chance to hear him: do it! kai *
