I think Carlos Castenada has admitted that his Don Juan character was an
entirely fictional one, but the practice of begging the forgiveness of the
prey one is about to kill is ancient in many civilizations. It is also the
origin for the animal-totem worship. I think Joeseph Campbell wrote about
this.
