Thanks for a thoughtful, insightful post.

That's true, but only up to a point, imo. Behind the
text, in most cases at least, are human beings, with
feelings, and lives apart from Pynchon-L. I think we
do best when we remember this as we write our texts
here. It's not only text, it's people, too; naive as
that may sound, I believe it's an assertion that's
easy to support. (I'm not at all suggesting that John
forgets or overlooks that, by the way, he is and
always has been a thoughtful and considerate
participant here, imo.)

Going out of one's way to ridicule the religious
beliefs held by certain P-listers seems quite rude, to
me, for example as well going out of your way to
ridicule people who don't subscribe to a particular
literary-critical approach. Likewise, it is rude for
someone to ridicule somebody else's literary-critical
approach or religious beliefs (I almost said "or lack
thereof" but we all have them -- some of us worship
Materialsm, Science, TV, etc.).

I find it amusing that some folks keep pointing their
fingers at Terrance, or me, or somebody else, and
fling solemn accusastions of ad hominem attacks and
flaming, even as they indulge in precisely the same
tactics again and again. The hypocrisy is obvious.

Mea culpa as it applies to me, of course. But, imo (do
as you like, of course, how could it be otherwise) we
could all benefit from watching our on posts as much
as we watch and whine about what others write.

Still flame-free,
Doug
