684-6 Tox's star is on the wane amongst the locals, the Golem (now
self-styled as "*His* Golem") become somewhat mundane, incredible.

Mason accuses Dixon of wanting to invite Tox along, Golem in tow, as a sort
of freakshow which will earn Jere celebrity and free drinks (cf. Professor
Voam and FelĂpe, the performing eel), whereas Mason's motives are more
personal, spiritual, the "Obvious Question" for him being to inquire into
the fate of the Human Soul, and of Rebekah.

Tox eventually vanishes from sight, and from the narrative, in a phantasmal
Conestoga Waggon, no more now than a legend himself.
