NP Gould's Book of Fish

I'm currently reading Richard Flanagan's _Gould's Book of Fish_ (first 
mentioned on this list, I believe, by Mr. Romeo). A very unusual, and 
beautiful, book that I'm enjoying greatly.

Flanagan (or at least his character Gould) seems to come down on the side of 
those who would claim that the artist is not the final word on the meaning 
of his or her work. Gould states of one of his paintings "the subtle 
messages of my work were, I decided, not for me to decode." Another 
character "whose opinion I had not solicited" tells Gould, "You are the 
fish, not the net."
