OK, Last one too.
Although I would like to read more on Leptons and the like.
The Jobbers would fit right in.
"Many people, even from far away, make the Journey [West]."
Climb to a limb wide enough not to fall off of and camped.
And so on...this is one more example of the Europeans paving paradise
and putting up a parking lot. Why a Giant Hemp Plant? Why not? The story
is being told to Mason and Dixon. The Journey UP the Plant is UP the
plant because that's where Mason says his Paradise is. The NA Paradise
or Spiritual Village is to the WEST. The pot plant is introduced because
it excites Dixon. It is Dixon who reminds the story teller to focus on
the Hemp. And the smoke, lots of smoke, is not only burning Hemp, but
burning trees and campfires. When the Europeans came, they came with a
hostile attitude toward nature and they burned the place up. And, as
mentioned, the Giant Plant and/or Trees have a religious significance in
P's fiction (Eliade).
I could go on and on but I'd bore you.
Lepton is, after all, a Lepton.
And Prairie of VL is a Prairie.
VL page 315 TREES!
VL page 316 "Where's that Prairie?
THAT? That Prairie is to be found in Emerson, Melville, Whitman,
Dickinson, Thoreau, Hawthorne....the Icelandic Sagas, so on and so
on...Vineland....the dream of, the hpe for, the subjunctive tales and
spaces, and, for example, in Melville it is also the sea where no harbor
of refuge exists, where all is divided, as from the first day of
creation, the lands from the seas, and in Dickinson, a walk through the
Valley of Death or a stage coach ride through the Prairie of desperate
immensity. MD.361
To the beautiful passage at 350-51
"Were the Visto to've cross'd the Warrior Path and simply proceeded
West."
The Hemp story is kinda lame compared with this, but I can't help but
think we are asked to compare them. Rapture!
