>>>So I disagree just a little, there is something in the text that has the
meaning
of Dixon's fist remaining stationary, in place -- <<<

This requires truncating the scene. The fist had to be somewhere and then
moved by Dixon's action to get to the point at which it remained stationary.
Just as 'place' connotes 'in place' it also connotes purpose and
particularity of said place. The word 'places' is in no sense a passive
verb. Try cutting and pasting a dictionary definition of the transitive verb
'place' followed by a continuation of your interpretation of this event. For
added effect paste a definition of the word 'transitive.'
