Fair enough. I think we've demonstrated, again, that Pynchon leaves plenty
of room to find what a determined reader wants to find in here. You seem
determined to read Dixon as violent,  punching and even whipping the
slave-driver with his own whip, abandoning his pacifist Quaker roots.  I
prefer to see Dixon here coming to a deeper understanding -- by accident
maybe, pressed by the realities of the situation and the danger he finds
himself in --  of his role in the System, managing to channel his rage into
a positive act, breaking away from the violent urge which at first propels
him. Is it a floor wax, or is it a dessert topping?  It's B0TH!
