I suppose, given the police presence on Calvary, it would
have been impossible for some ancestor of Dixon to 
act as an "instrument of god," wrest the whip away from
the driver, and allow jesus if he chose to scurry off
into the crowd of jerusalemites.

But maybe that would have been acting as an instrument
against god? 

Difficult for a man of conscience to be sure, when "Christ's 
true Pity lies so beyond us..." [231.16]

Acting in good faith and the promise of redemption seems to be
the message here- But it's a bit of a sinecure, isn't it, something for
nothing?

I prefer Dixon's implicit recognition of the benefits of "Horse Sense" 
to smoak the best intentions of higher assemblies.

What would Derrida do?
