Not sure about cricket, but in American Baseball, in the National
league, a pinch hitter comes in only in a pinch
while a designated hitter comes in for the pitcher every time he is
expected to bat.
Dave is definitely playing in the American league where the designated
hitter or DH, like a hired lawyer or gun, goes to bat for the pitcher
every time.
