"What is most appealing about young folks, after all, is the
changes, not the still photograph of the finished character
but the movie, the soul in flux...and education too, as
Henry Adams always sez, keeps going on forever."

SL.23, Pynchon

The Education of Henry Adams is a classic in the proper sense that,
while it is read by few, it has helped to shape the notions and
emotions of millions of Americans who have never even heard of it.
Adams....in his old age became less a historian than a philosopher of
history....but he was a historian- philosopher with the soul of an
artist....as an artist he groped for symbols--not only words but
images. His first great image came to him in the summer of 1895 when,
...he toured Normandy....the virgin ....in 1905 Adams found his second
  image, the dynamo.

Lynn White Jr. "Dynamo and Virgin Reconsidered" (1958)
