Now that I think about it my own Bronx-born fear of
rats and roaches, hotels, motels, holiday inns,  is
probably what influenced my reading of that name and
prevented my seeing the obvious connection to
Pynchon's attitude toward the Army. Of course, like
Pynchon,  I was never in the army. I never lived in
LA. Like Pynchon, I was in the Navy (Seabee) and I
lived in MS (Gulfport) for a while and on Diego Garcia
for about as long as any man can live there and not
end up in Gilligan's hospital for the sun blinded and
melanoma minded.   In MS they have chorus frogs.  Do
they have chorus frogs in LA?
