I don't either. I did ask early on, facitiously,  if Pynchon's negative 
reference in "Introduction" to linking sex with death was a slap at 
Papa. I wasn't thinking at all of _A Farewell to Arms_ (the book P 
happens to mention)  but to  _For Whom the Bell Tolls_, in which Maria 
and Robert both feel that they DIED when they make love  for the first 
time. They also felt the earth move. I think many have thought down 
through the years that Hemingway was nearing self-parody here. 
Unintentionally of course.  The passage used to be much talked about. 
Don't know if it still is.
