Louisiana terrain is correct, so building up an interpretation of the story
based on the notion that Pynchon has altered the landscape to fit his literary
allusions is bogus.

to a point, but Fort Roach is The Wasteland that Pynchon created in the story.
Pynchon can write anything he wants, true to life, poetic, or plodding. His
choice. As for Southern Louisiana, especially a bayou-land ever resembling a
desert, that would take a LOT of imagination. One has to fight nature in order
to keep it from growing into every crack of the sidewalk and mortar joint on
the side of your house. This is a land of decay and growth, and they are
really the same thing here (everywhere?).
