He's parodying his critics. Or at least hedging his bets in the face of
their criticism. He loves overlaidious alluding. And I don't think it's all
so expertly and intentionally crafted. I'm reminded of my childhood
evangelists and preachers when I read discussions of Pynchon's work, most
notably M&D. It's as interesting noting which portions of the holy writ are
ignored as which portions are discussed.
