I taught in a HS for girls in NYC (public beleive it
or not) and I taught in a school of education.
My strategy is to let kids recommend books to kids.
When a student reads a book they can stick a short
note in the front. Not a book report. Just a brief
note addressed to prospective readers. Even a star
system works. Another stratagey is the banned book
list. Teenagers are real smart these days but a little
reverse psychology or suggestion therapy will get them
reading Catcher In The Rye. Not a book most young
ladies like very much. But neither is 1984. Terry
McMillan is popular. MOre popular than Toni Morrison.

To get kids reading try Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Religion and Death and stuff. try The Lovely Bones by
Alice Sebold or Life of Pi by Yann Martel
That Christianity and Patriarchy sounds like The
Handmaid's By Margaret Atwood
Dystopia stuff, why not try 1984 upside down or Brave
New World by Aldous Huxley
For Pre-adult death, try Logan's Run

It's hard enough to get kids reading these days, never
mind getting them to read good books or even an
average newspaper or magazine, but torture and
punshment is a proven strategy.

God, Waiting For my wife I was thinking about poor
Bill Zantzinger and that tree. If there is a tree in
my family, talk about inflicting orthodoxy, it is
chestnut tree. Me, I'm tied to it, foaming at the
mouth, screaming at the priest in Latin.
