Well, again, I don't blame Tolkien, but I have no
doubt that there are nonetheless some prejudices
deeply embedded in the codes he draws upon, in those
white, er, western (and don't forget the
Kalevala--indeed, Elvish grammar is largely Finnish
grammar) sources. I think we agree on that. Me, I
don't feel the white male guilt (and I'm about as
white as they come, though maybe not so masculine),
and, while I think that Shapiro guy overstated his,
the case, well, y'all know I'm not one to let
unpopular arguments, ideas, whatever, be all too
easily, all too simply dismissed here, simply because
they're unpopular. Devil's advocate. The
Jesuit/ACLU lawyer in me. It's not my argument, but
... well, I conceive of this list as more a
brainstorming session than an arena, so ...
