Again with the babies and the bathwater here. Thank

coordination,

Point was, political quietism. Do not confuse yr
hippies with yr New Left with yr the rest of as likely
as not 60s Right-thinkin' America. Again, see

But this is what I mean by babies 'n' bathwater.
Rather than simply denouncing something, first see
what might be of interest, of merit, of use.
Bricolage. Shapiro overstates his, not to mention
the, case, but that's not to say that there isn't a
case. Well, duh, "Western" (European, North American,
North Atlantic) mythography/folklore/what have you
generally inscribes that binary--generally inscribes
binaries, for that matter ....--White/black. And this
is not without real effects, or real causes. But even
as Tolkien (in a continuum of authors) reinscribes it,
doesn't mean one has to throw him out with his
racially-polarized legacy (in either direction). That
more than anything is the point Shapiro misses, no?
Again, think, along other lines, Edgar Degas, T.S.
Eliot, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, even Paul De Man.
Tolkien of course isn't nearly so deliberate ...

But in all fairness to Bob Heinlein, do see also ...

I'm not convinced, but, in the meantime ...
