France to Send Philosopher on Afghan Mission
February 05, 2002 09:37 AM ET

PARIS (Reuters) - Leading intellectual Bernard-Henri Levy will travel to
Afghanistan shortly on behalf of the French government to evaluate the needs
and expectations of the Afghan population, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

The dashing philosopher has traveled to the region several times in the past
in support of the late Afghan anti-Taliban commander Ahmad Shah Masood,
assassinated shortly before the September 11 attacks on the United States.

The 53-year-old Levy rose to fame as part of the generation of new
philosophers in the 1970s. He is also celebrated in France as the thinking
woman's sex symbol.
