Now, of course, Don Josef Vicente Lopez de Herrera is
most likely our man here, but that need not rule out
the other Vicente Lopezes as irrelevant.  Indeed, the
undetermination of "Don Vicente Lopez" here, at least
as extracted as such from the text, serves to call
forth all these various Vincente Lopezes, and then
some.  A court painter of "religious, allegorical, and
mythological scenes," "statesmen, academics, and other
important figures, as well as dramatic and emotional
religious subjects," and, esp., an "Argentine
statesman and poet" who authored "Triunfo argentino, a
ballad celebrating the successful Argentine defense
against the British, and a war song commemorating the
triumph of the revolution, which was adopted as the
national hymn in 1813" certainly have their resonances
here, elsewhere in that Pynchonian ouevre, no?  Yes,
indeedy they do.  Precisely the kind of nomenclatural
overtones, undertones, harmonics, grace notes,
whatever, that Charles Hollander, for example, has
been (an)notating ...
