It wasn't that long ago that JFK's Roman Catholicism was an issue in the 
public mind:  Would his allegiance to Rome supercede his allegiance to the 
US of A?  Unlike most Protestantism, Roman Catholicism is a vast and very 
rich quasi-centralized power, the very nature of which should raise the 
question of potential conspiracies.  Ripe material for Pynchon.
