How to tell the "fake" news from the "real"? I like what Pynchon had to
say (via translation and re-translation) in that Playboy Japan interview:
"The problem is the ordinary citizen cannot distinguish the news from the
propaganda. The problem is the ordinary citizen cannot distinguish the news
from propaganda. [...] In a time of war, information warfare is rather
important and even those respected newspapers cannot be trusted. The
founder of the Daily Mail, which was published 100 years ago in London,
said 'News is something somebody wants to suppress. Everything else is
propaganda.' The information that the reporters can obtain easily is likely
to be propaganda even when it comes from the White House."

I don't suppose anybody has heard anything about Pynchon bringing a legal
challenge of some sort or otherwise acting to disavow the Playboy Japan
interview? I have heard from a source who cannot be named but who should
know, that a Japanese acquaintance talked to the editor of Playboy Japan,
who told him (my friend's acquaintance) that the reporter who did the
interview with Pynchon knows Pynchon personally, but the editor wouldn't go
into detail. He said the piece won't be published in the US edition of
Playboy.

Rich Romeo:
These lovely fake press, info ops goings on will be initiated at the Office
of Strategic Influence at the Pentagon.
