Pynchon and Automata

Point is, Vaucanson wasn't quite on the up and up
there.  Have posted that Bedini link, but it pays to
check it out in print, as Derek de Solla Price's
"Automata and the Origins of Mechanism and Mechnistic
Philosophy" is in the same issue of Technology and
Culture (Vol. 5, No. 1 [Winter 1964]).  If anyone's
interested, well, I've already sent copies to a few of
you, so ... but see also Bedini's "The Transit in the
Tower: English Astronomical Instruments in Colonial
America" (Annals of Science 54 [1997]: pp. 161-96),
which I've deployed here a few times as well ...
