  * dave douglas: stargazer. music by and for wayne shorter. (with chris speed,
joshua roseman, uri caine, james genus, joey baron.) nyc 1997: arabesque.

in particular the title track "stargazer" (composition by dd) would fit
perfectly into an audio-collage on "mason & dixon" ~~~ with the years i've
come to love the trumpet more and more ~ god's own horn or something ~ among
the living players (any recommendations?) i know of, dave douglas is, together
with kenny wheeler, definitely my favorite one ~ (if you're interested in
new jazz you may check out "www.davedouglas.com") ~ last week, on thursday
night, i took the chance to hear dave douglas play with the misha mengelberg
quartet in the "fabrik" in hamburg-altona ~ still lacking substancial jazz
knowledge i cannot write here an actual review ~ but let me tell you: these 90
minutes of intensity, contact and freedom belong to my most precious concert
experience ~ especially the drummer han bennink and dave douglas himself were
really rocking the house! ~ afterwards we felt wide, sweet & wild ~ there was
no thought of sleep ~ smoking sticky green me gazed into the deep nightish sky
with its thousands of flickering stars ~~~ kai, whose favorite dd tune is -
these days - "mao's moon" from john zorn's new easy listening album "the
gift", a remarkable record of "post-pynchonian" surf music ***
