HEADLINE: Center unboxes 175 greatest works for show

BYLINE: Michael Barnes, American-Statesman Arts Writer

BODY:
It takes only one visit. A stroll through the exhibit "From Gutenberg to
Gone With the Wind: Treasures from the Ransom Center" argues better than any
newspaper article the global significance of the University of Texas' $1
billion cultural archives. Because the Ransom Center's home at Guadalupe and
21st streets is under renovation, this show is set up at the LBJ Library and
Museum through May 3. The 175 items on display represent just a sliver of
the center's 30 million literary manuscripts, 1 million rare books, 5
million photographs, 100,000 pieces of art and miscellaneous ephemera --
items such as desks, pens and paperweights that belonged to writers or
artists.

American novelists are not ignored. A few steps away are letters and other
writings of Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Pynchon and J.D. Salinger, even the
road journal of Jack Kerouac (author of "On the Road," the Beat bible). The
current Ransom director, Thomas Staley, is a scholar of James Joyce, and
near the American artifacts is a first edition and proof sheets for Joyce's
"Ulysses," heavily revised by the Irish author and one of the center's most
precious holdings.
