Also just scored ...

In conjunction with the exhibition, "Devices of

But back to the book. Chapters include The Demon of
Analogy, Techniques of Epiphany, Wunderkammern and
Wunderkabinette, Lodestones and Magnets, Anamorphosis,
Mirrors, Automata (Batteries Not Included), The
Pantograph and the Writing Automaton, The Boxes of
Joseph Cornell, The Shadows of Kara Walker, Panoramas,
Diorama, and much, much more. Terpak I'm not familiar
with, but Stafford is not only the author of the very
wonderful Body Criticism: Imaging the Unseen in
Enligtenment Art and Medicine (1993), Artful Science:
Enlightenment, Entertainment, and the Eclipse of
Visual Education (1994), et al., but a very nice lady
in person as well. And, yes, Vaucanson's Duck does
come up along the way ...
