Lafferty

Just like to echo Richard Romeo's mention of Lafferty. No he's not in the same
literary class as Pynchon. A story teller rather than a writer, his short
stories are the best.

Richard has probably mentioned all his most straight forward novels (Reefs of
Earth, Past Master and Fourth Mansions). I like the Devil is Dead and Arrive at
Easterwine although the first is too episodic to be a satisfying novel and
Easterwine is largely allegorical and drunk on polyglottery, but contains some
great wit.

His short stories however are some of the best tall tales in (out of) print.
The collection 900 Grandmothers contains most of the best, though the other two
Ace collections Strange Doings and Ringing Changes contain a few real gems.
Look out for Been A Long Long Time which contains a great take on those
monkeys, the works of Shakespeare, and how long a long time can be!

Happy new year to you all
Mike
