I think what I like best of the comments attributed to Pynchon in Playboy
Japan are the war profiteering dig at Bush and what I read as an allusion
to the danger of trying to project evil onto some Other (Osama bin Laden,
in this case; the Lambton Worm in M&D) and destroy it -- both of which tie
neatly into textual elements in M&D and other Pynchon novels, and which
have also been major thrusts of the progressive critique of the US-led
attack on Afghanistan.
