That's the way y'all seem to want him kept, at any
rate ...

What is it with the anxiety 'bout Pynchon 'n' The
Press 'round these parts? If the guy doesn't want to
be bugged, well, fine, don't bug him, then, but if it
just so happens he does want to say a little
something, well, why all the fuss? Worried he might
not say what you want him to? How many of yr creative
types really live up to the works they're know for in
their daily life, anyway? Though Pynchon's usually
pretty interesting, entertaining, even (I reread the
"Luddite" piece from time to time just for the sheer
pleasuure of it). He seems to pop up regularly enough
in back-cover blurbs (though, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
in the NYTBR aside, it is interesting that he
generally sticks to the margins when commenting
publicly on lit'rachure). Though I will confess to
feeling that slight pang at a certain loss of mystery
when it came up ca. M&D that he really wasn't so much
a mysterious recluse as just someone not altogether
unlocatable living with his family in a major
metropolis who just didn't want to be petsered, is
all. Anyway, I'm getting myself a copy of that
Playboy interview, and, even if I can't translate it,
I know a few people who can, and hopefully I'll be
able to cobble together a paraphrase by parallax
myself. But one of these days I'm gonna post that bit
speculating about Pynchon doing a talkshow tour
following the publication of Mason & Dixon (from the
Baffler? Somebody remind me, so's I can find it) ...
