"[...] Hajdu conducted hundreds of interviews for each of his books, but
his favorite source is someone he's never met. The reclusive Thomas
Pynchon, who was a close friend of FariƱa's, replied (by fax) to an
extensive list of questions and permitted Hajdu to quote from his
correspondence. "This is the guy who enjoined the Morgan Library from
making his letters available to scholars until after his death!" exclaims
the author, who describes their epistolary exchanges as "one of the most
exhilarating research experiences of my life." [...]

I'm not certain now where I got the impression that Hajdu got more material
from Pynchon than he used in this book -- probably from somebody offlist.
Hajdu does seem to have had a substantial interaction with Pynchon, judging
from his remarks to PW at least, and PW doesn't have a problem with calling
that interaction an interview. (We haven't seen Pynchon take steps to
disown the quotes and info attributed to him in Hajdu's book either.)
